Yakṣa asked:
By what quality will one be accepted by others?
Dharmarāja answered:
By not having bad egoism.
Egoism is an appreciation of the self in the wrong way. A wrong assessment of one’s wealth, knowledge, etc.
One may think, ‘I have huge wealth, so I can do anything due to this wealth.’ This is a wrong assessment of wealth. One may think, ‘I am knowledgable, and no one has more knowledge.’ Egoism is a product of avidyā, ignorance. Ignorance leads to egoism. This egoism keeps the door closed to understanding this universe.
