Jivana Yoga Review Week – Sintra, Portugal
Post from Kristin
We covered the first pāda of the Yoga Sutra, in the recent Jivana review week. Again -I was struck by this remarkable sutra:
Aphorism 1.20
श्रद्धावीर्यस्मृतिसमाधिप्रज्ञापूर्वकं इतरेषम् ॥२०॥
Śraddhā vīrya smṛti samādhi prajñā pūrvakaṃ itareṣam ॥20॥
- Śraddhā – firm faith
- Vīrya – energy
- Smṛti – memory
- Samādhi – Transcendental State
- Prajñā – strong knowledge
- Pūrvakaṃ – accomplished by
- Itareṣam – of others
How to achieve the target? First we must have firm faith. This faith is something very personal, internal.
‘The faith expected here is total belief about the Eternal Truth about the Eternal Teacher and his advice and the technique suggested by an Eternal Teacher. This faith drives an individual to the final target.’ ~ Ācārya
In a beautiful unfolding of nature, this faith leads to strength of the body, mind, and intellect. We are unlimited in our capacities.
‘Confidence develops effort and faith develops confidence.’ Effort is our strength manifesting. This leads to enthusiasm on the yogic journey.
‘Strength of the body, mind and intellect is nothing but keeping it pure – when this purity, perfection is established, as a result of that the memory will be established to the fullest extent. Then, with the small support of a teacher or some technique, or support rendered by nature, one may recollect the past experience of union with the Eternal Truth, and this leads to the Transcendental State.’
What an amazing role faith plays in all of this, and such an inner characteristic, its roots directly connected to the heart. My heart is struck!
